Professor Finley joined three dynamic African American women on a panel to encourage young girls to pursue careers in STEM. The panel was organized by Black Girls Code and the Institute of Engineering Community and Cultural Competence (IEC3).

Prof. Finley shared her background and what inspired her to become a chemical engineer. She also gave the advice to the girls to get comfortable being different, as a minority (both in race and gender) in STEM, and embrace that uniqueness as a chance to shine.

The other panelists included Shana Douglass, president of USC’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers; Khali Cannad, a systems engineer at Northrup Grumman; and Jasmine Berry, a Ph.D. student specializing in brain theory in USC Viterbi’s Department of Computer Science.

It was a great opportunity to reach out to the next generation and show them an example of what is possible with a STEM degree!
