CSBL paper published in new Nature Systems Biology journal
October 21, 2016Professor Finley gives invited talk at the University of Pittsburgh
November 12, 2016Last month, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering VAST (Viterbi Adopt-a-School Adopt-a-Teacher) Program hosted more than 300 middle and high school students on campus. The VAST STEM Spotlight highlighted various faculty and research labs to introduce students to the exciting work being conducted in Biomedical Engineering (BME) at USC.
Professor Finley and CSBL trainees participated in the day’s events by hosting four groups of students and teaching them about the applications of mathematical modeling. Prof. Finley described a bit about the lab’s research in applying mathematical modeling to study cell signaling. Then, Dr. Finley led the students in a hands-on example to learn about how the model the spread of viruses. The students acted out the process of viral infection and then compared their in-class “experiment” to predictions from the standard SIR (susceptible-infected-recovered) mathematical model.
The results were amazing! The students enjoyed seeing first hand how mathematical models can be used to understand everyday activities.

Congratulations to Prof. Finley and the CSBL for sparking an interest in math in future engineers scientists!
